- 1. What is ACACIA wood?
Acacia is a group of shrubs and trees belonging to the subfamily Mimosoideae of the family Fabaceae, first described in Africa by the Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus in 1773. The plants tend to be thorny and pod-bearing, with sap and leaves typically bearing large amounts of tannins.
The name derives from ακις (akis) which is Greek for a sharp point, due to the thorns in the type-species Acacia nilotica ("Nile Acacia") from Egypt. Acacias are also known as thorntrees, whistling thorns or wattles, including the yellow-fever acacia and umbrella acacias. There are roughly 1300 species of acacia worldwide, about 960 of them native to Australia, with the remainder spread around the tropical to warm-temperate regions of both hemispheres, including Europe, Africa, southern Asia, and the Americas.
- 2. Which ACACIA species we are using?
The Acacia hybrid, a cross between Acacia Mangium and Acacia Auriculiformis, grows in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and China. The Acacia hybrid is a medium-sized tree that looks similar to A. mangium. In 2 years, the tree can reach 8 to 10 m and 7.5 to 9.0 cm d.b.h. The species grows on sandy loam or sandy clay loam soils; however, it also thrives on lateritic crude soils. Acacia hybrid is found where temperatures range from 12 to 35 °C, annual precipitation is 1200 to 1850 mm, and elevation is 50 to 350 m. to A. mangium. - 3. Why ACACIA HYBRID?
The Acacia hybrid trees grow very fast, Stem volume of acacia hybrids is 2-3 times greater than that of Acacia Mangium and 3-4 times greater than that of Acacia Auriculiformis of the same age. To get the timber for furniture production, it will take around 7 years from the day we seed.
- 4. What kinds of products we can make from ACACIA HYBRID?
From Acacia hybrid we can make many different types of product; Material for paper mills, Packaging Items as pallets, crates…, Construction accessories as doors and windows, floors, wall panel, moulding…, Furnitures, Glued board…
- 5. How dry is the wood?
It is depend on purpose of the material, normally, the Moisture Contain (MC) of Acacia after drying Kiln is about 8% - 10%.
- 6. How long will the drying process take?
It is too difficult to calculate because there are too many complicated variables, such as weather conditions, thickness of wooden slats, how “wet” the timbers we get. For Acacia, the Drying Process might take from 20 days to 40 days
- 7. How heavy is the wood?
The weight of completely dry wood is related to the compactness of the cells which depends on the species of wood. "Softwoods"such as balsa or pine are relatively light (large cells with lots of empty space in between which is why they are "soft") while "hardwoods" like oak, walnut or ebony are relatively heavy (small cells packed closely togehter which makes them "hard"). Completely dry Acacia hybrid might weigh 600 - 650 Kgs per cubic meters.
- 8. What is softwood/hardwood?
Softwood are conifer trees. They are not also softer than hardwoods. Hardwoods are usually deciduous. Oak, ash, elm, maple and mahogany are all hardwoods.
